HandedDown Privacy Policy
About HandedDownPrivacy policyDelete your data
Last updated: November 1, 2026
This policy covers the HandedDown™ app for Android ("HandedDown," "the app"), made by Squared Roots Co. LLC ("we," "us"), a Washington limited liability company. Our website's general privacy policy is here.
The short version: HandedDown stores the how-tos your family writes so your family's phones can see them. Parents sign in with Google; kids don't give us any personal information. We don't show ads, we don't use analytics or tracking, and we never sell data.
Who uses HandedDown
HandedDown is used by families. Parents create a family, write and edit how-tos, and manage who belongs. Kids join a family on their own device with a family code a parent gives them. A kid's device can only read the family's how-tos; it can't change them or share anything.
What we collect
From parents
- Google account email address and a sign-in ID, when a parent signs in with Google. Google also passes along the name and profile photo on that account, which our sign-in provider stores with the sign-in; the app doesn't display or use them. We use the email to identify which family a parent belongs to and to let one parent add another.
- Family content you create: the family name, how-tos (titles, steps, notes, age levels) and the "Know by heart" card. The Know by heart card may include information you choose to add, such as a home address, phone numbers or a meeting place.
- Parent list: the email addresses of parents you add to your family.
From kids' devices
- An anonymous sign-in ID, created automatically when a device joins with a family code. It contains no name, email, phone number or other personal information. We use it only to confirm that the device belongs to the family.
- The family code that was entered and the date the device joined, to check that it matches.
Stored only on the device (never sent to us)
- The reading level chosen on that device (7+, 10+, 13+ or all).
- Which how-tos have been marked "I've got this."
What we don't collect
We don't collect children's names, ages, email addresses, phone numbers, photos, contacts, precise or approximate location, advertising IDs or device identifiers. We don't use analytics, advertising or tracking tools in the app.
How we use it
Only to run the app: to show your family's how-tos on your family's devices, keep each family's information private from every other family, let parents manage their family, and respond if you contact us.
Where it's stored and who can see it
Your family's information is stored with Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore), which processes it on our behalf. It's encrypted in transit. Security rules let only your family's parents and joined devices read it, and only parents change it. People outside your family, including other HandedDown families, can't see it.
We don't sell, rent or share your information with anyone else, except if required by law.
Children's privacy
HandedDown is designed for parents to share family how-tos with their children. Children don't create accounts and don't provide personal information; a parent controls the family, its content and which devices can join. The content kids see is written by their own parents. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your family's information while your family uses HandedDown.
- Delete your whole family: the parent who created the family can open the app, tap the gear icon, and choose Delete our family and all its data. This permanently deletes every how-to, the Know by heart card, the family code, the parent list and all joined devices.
- Leave a family: another parent can choose Leave this family, and a kid's device can choose Leave the family on this phone. This removes that sign-in.
- Can't use the app? Email [email protected] from the Google account you used, and we'll delete it for you within 30 days.

Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. For significant changes we'll also let parents know in the app.
